Persian city from Sassanian times until the Treaty of Gulistan in 1813 when ceded to Russians. Situated along the south east coast of the Caucasus, it is considered one of the oldest cities in the world, having been continuously occupied since 8th Century BCE. A critical strategic access point from the Caspian to the Caucasus Mountains, it has been occupied by Persians, Mongols, Timurids, and Russians over the centuries.
Kuba rugs are esteemed among the finest woven and detailed of Caucasian rugs. Derbend while an outlier from Daghestan shares similaries in colors and fineness of weave and are often smaller than the typical Kuba.
