Antique Persian Heriz

Fueled by demand from exposure to millions at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851 and the Vienna World's Fair in 1873, industrious Persian entrepreneurs from Tabriz reached out  to the nearby village communities in Azerbaijan and established production in villages such as Heris, Bakhshayesh, and Karajeh, mostly in large format in the late 1800s. With its hearty construction, second only to Bijar in durability, vegetal dyes, and large geometric format, the Heris family of rugs has been hugely popular in the West ever since.

While the vast number of Heris rugs feature a central medallion, far fewer are made with a more informal allover design affording a stately design and lessening placement issues.
